The Internet has grown from the collaborative efforts of people over several decades; the documents for sharing information and passing along and discussing standards are located within Network Information Centers (NICs). NICs are the repositories for several kinds of documents that play a role in describing what the Internet is and how it works.

This section gives you resources for finding information on the Internet.
Sites that provide lists of new information sites on the Internet play an important role in getting the word out about resources. Other sites pass judgments on other sites-originating from "cool sites," these sites recognize other sites for a variety of reasons, not all of which make sense.

The practice of making lists is an old one on the Internet. This section provides you with a selection of these kinds of lists. You'll find that each one provides a different way to look at the Internet and what it offers. These are not strict categorizations of all the possible subjects on the Internet (see the "Subject" section for that); instead, they are eclectic selections of what is significant for a variety of audiences or to the list's editor.

Searching by subject is one of the main ways that you might try to locate information on the Internet. Subject libraries are among the oldest kinds of repositories for information on the Internet. Not all follow a strict scheme for breaking down subjects; most also provide some sort of search facility for their own database.

WhoWhere? (http://www.whowhere.com) A comprehensive white page service for locating people and organizations on the Net. This is a vast collection; it will give you a lot of hits on a name. This is the directory to use for finding people who have an e-mail account.
